This is a group of fifteen Civil War letters, chiefly from Louis Fitzgerald to is mother, plus a rough map of Bull Run, a few printed items, three photographs, and some pencilled notes. They all pertain to the career of Louis Fitzgerald. Several of Fitzgerald's letters contain descriptions of battle action at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, New Bern, and Washington, (N.C.). One of the letters, that of August 7, 1863, recounts in detail Fitzgerald's near drowning in the explosion of the gunboat Hiram Barney on the James River. Another of September 28, 1863, is a description of a visit to Yorktown and Williamsburg.

Louis Fitzgerald was a junior officer during the Civil War who served as aide-de-camp to Generals Birney and Foster.
